Given the opportunity to eulogize a friend or family member, you’ll want to make a testament to their character, presenting a personal account of their life, to share with others those qualities of the deceased that made them special. A good eulogy is a short story, an emotional rendering of a fellow human being’s values, personality and, or perspective that is uniquely theirs.
In contrast, an obituary should read more like a very biased news account covering the highlights and notable achievements of the person in question. Personal insight or anecdotes regarding the deceased are unnecessary and inappropriate. Quite often an obituary is written by a third party, of no relation to the person who has passed.
And finally, a funeral notice is merely a collection of the relevant facts pertaining to the life and death of an individual. Although crafted in paragraph form, it could also be a simple set of bullet points. It’s an unembellished, factual listing of people, places and things relevant to the a person’s birth, life, and death.
